Smarter dispensing. Better outcomes. More capacity for clinical care.
FLOWRx is an advanced pharmacy hub automation platform purpose which can transform care home pharmacy workflows, freeing up your team to focus on patient care, improve accuracy, and grow your care home service offering. FLOWRx offers specialist workflows designed especially for care home pharmacies including, split packs, bulky items, fridge items and controlled drugs.
Operating a care home pharmacy service involves far more than dispensing. Pharmacists are increasingly expected to:
Support care home staff with medicines expertise
Provide structured medication reviews
Conduct training and compliance audits
Manage complex polypharmacy safely
Maintain detailed records for regulation and quality standards
This additional workload can stretch teams already working at full capacity with manual dispensing and administrative tasks absorbing valuable time.
The FLOWRx Hub supports the centralised processing of care home prescriptions through a structured and configurable workflow. Orders are managed, prepared, picked, labelled, sorted, checked, and packed in a controlled sequence, enabling efficient handling of routine monthly prescriptions and acute (interim) items within the same operational framework.
In a care home hub setting, prescription orders are clinically checked by a pharmacist, with accuracy checking conducted by the pharmacist or an ACT. Once authorised, orders are transmitted to the FLOWRx Connect server, located within the dispensing unit or wholesaler/warehouse environment.
Orders are triaged and released to FLOWRx in planned waves, supporting separation of routine monthly cycles and acute (interim) prescriptions. FLOWRx then determines whether an order is treated as monthly or acute based on configuration at the point of order generation i.e. whether orders are generated as segregated totes or consolidated totes.
Acute prescriptions are processed through the same physical workflows as routine prescriptions but are prioritised for turnaround and dispatch. Where orders are consolidated, FLOWRx applies a marker to the patient bag to clearly identify acute handling requirements and support earlier dispatch times.
FLOWRx also offers dedicated workflows for typical care home items, keeping your team efficient even with challenging prescriptions.
FLOWRx supports multiple methods for preparing split items, enabling the majority of split dispensing to be completed in advance of live order processing, while retaining flexibility for lower-volume and urgent requirements.
Certain medications require an inner label in addition to the label applied to the outer container. The ALU will label outer container and FLOWRx will identify whether an inner label is required. Where applicable, the completed basket is routed to manual labelling for the addition of the inner label before packing.
FLOWRx generates dedicated pick lists for bulky items so they can be picked as a batch and processed separately.
FLOWRx generates pick lists for fridge items and controlled drugs, which are picked as dedicated batches. These items are processed using the same labelling, sortation, and packing principles as original packs, with additional controls applied as required. Once packed, fridge items and controlled drugs are returned immediately to appropriate temperature-controlled or secure storage until dispatch.
Since adopting FLOWRx for original pack dispensing:
These improvements translate directly into higher service capacity, safer outcomes, and strategic growth opportunities for care home pharmacy providers.
Care home residents typically take multiple medicines daily, and the shift toward original pack dispensing, now recommended over compliance aids, makes manual workflows increasingly untenable. FLOWRx helps you meet these demands without sacrificing safety or quality.
